The development of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired is one of the most complex interdisciplinary research areas. These devices exploit the ability of the brain to adapt, learn and process the lost sensory information (vision) using sounds and/or haptics. Starting from previously published research results, this paper explores the users’ requirements and practicality aspects necessary in the design of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired. A new mobile perception architecture is proposed and preliminary results are presented.
